Hello from the Geo Domain Expo

Posted under Domaining

Wanted to take a minute and say a quick hello. I am currently at the Geo Domain Expo conference in Chicago and am really enjoying it. It has been very interesting listening to all the folks talk about their geo domains and the success they have achieved. I’m jealous for sure. I’m going to see if I can sneak one for myself at the live auction tomorrow night. If any of you are here, please don’t bid against me. I’m the devilishly handsome dude with an obvious glint in my eye. I want one of those names.

I have one more thing to mention. I am developing an eCommerce website to sell Harley t-shirts online. I hope to make this a good example of what can be done with a good domain name if it is developed into a full-blown website. This name has been parked for a year and it is all my fault. I am trying to make up for my laziness and build this thing out. I want a hog shirt on the back of every biker in America.

Well that’s it for now. Catch you all later!

Napkin Pirates and Domaining

Napkin Pirates - A New Site, A New Challenge

There is currently an SEO challenge going on in the Kansas City area. We are all gunning for top organic rankings for the term “napkin pirates.” I, being an SEO and Domainer, have decided to leverage both disciplines to be successful in this SEO challenge. As such, I have purchased ThemedPartySupplies.com to use as a test case to see if I can get a brand new domain to rank in 30 days.

I will be certain to keep the readers of this blog posted as to my progress in this challenge. Any readers of you out there that are feeling extremely kind, I humbly request incoming links to my new napkin pirates website and/or this post. Thank you so much for your help.

Stay tuned!

ShoppingKansasCity.com Has Launched

Posted under Domaining

As a domainer, who is also an SEO, who is also a web developer I have been spending my time developing and SEOing some of the properties in my domain portfolio. This gives some explanation to the posting hiatus that has come as of late.

I have several projects in the works, but today I am going to go ahead and roll out a Kansas City Shopping website that I believe is ready to hit the wires. Take a look and see what you think. As you will notice, this is an example of what can be done with a domain property in a relatively short amount of time. It has content, it has been SEO’d, and I am already sending it traffic.

The idea for the site is to drive traffic for some targeted shopping-related terms, specifically for Kansas City, so the site can get in front of a valuable set of visitors. Once that happens, the valuable traffic can be sold to those who want it but can’t get it on their own.

The domain name of the new site, ShoppingKansasCity.com, lends itself well to the overall SEO plan even though the name itself does not bring in much type-in traffic on its own. For those of you who are interested, the lack of type-in traffic is likely due to the order of the geographic qualifier in the keyword phrase and the overall number of terms in the targeted phrase. As I mentioned, regardless of the type-in traffic, I know that the valuable terms are still in the domain name and therefore they will bring along the weight that is afforded to URLs containing keyword-rich terms.

Take a look at the site if you get a minute and keep an eye out as I continue to develop out my domain portfolio in the coming days.

Is NameJet Adding Bidders?

Posted under Domaining

This is a question that will never be answered, but it is worth asking.

Is NameJet adding bidders to auctions on domains that contain at least one bid?  I know that is a scandalous allegation, but it sure seems like very few names close with one bidder.

The other possibility would be that someone has a script that goes out and adds a bid on any name with one bidder.  If that’s true and you are reading this blog (unlikely), can I please get a copy of that script?  :)

I’ve tried adding bids early in the day, late in the day, and in between to see if I can find a time that will leave me as the lone bidder.  I’ve found that later is better, but it is still likely to attract competition as soon as a bid comes online.

I don’t mind waiting until later in the day, but there is a catch.  The catch is that when there is a legitimate bidder in the auction, the first bidder into the fray is the leading beginner when the auction starts.  First position is a position worth having, because many times bidders will not go over their initial $70 bid.  That eventually leaves the first bidder as the default winner.

What to do?  Who knows?  It is probably just that there are so many smart and observant people in this industry that it is rare to find a gem without someone else noticing the same sparkle.

One Man’s Loss Is Another Man’s Gain

Posted under Domaining

I lost two auctions today and like in the poker world, I am on tilt.  Oh well!

Congratulations to the new owners of:

OnlineFrench.com - $900
OEMWheel.com - $310

May you both (new owners) make the kind of money from those domains that I think they can actually make.

Frank’s On Vacation. Now What?

Posted under Domaining

Man oh man, my Google Reader is quiet. Well, the problem is specifically with my Domaining folder.

Mr. Frank Schilling is on vacation and I am not sure I like it. I am going to have to count on Adam, Jay, Sahar, Ron, Frank, and Elliot to pick up the slack and help me get through this mess.

Frank, I miss you already man. Have a great vacation. I’ll read you when you get back.

In the meantime, check out Ron Jackson’s story on Frank over at DNJournal.

The Confessions of a Direct Navigator

Posted under Domaining

OK, I admit it. I am a direct navigator. I’m one of the people that the domaining industry loves to serve. Heck, that’s one of the reasons I know this game works. If I do it, then there must be others.

Well the point in me telling you any of this is because I was trying to go to DNForum tonight and was clearly unsuccessful on my first attempt. I typed dnforums in the URL bar and then hit CTRL + Enter (that fills in the http://www. and .com for those of you who don’t know). I was then presented with a parked domain owned by Adam Dicker. Adam appears to have figured out the domain game and he is playing it against one of our own.

Now I don’t know how much traffic Adam is pulling down from this endeavor, but I welcome Adam’s comments if he is so inclined to give them. I’m guessing he is going to keep that little number to himself. Anyway, for those of you who want to see some of this stuff in action just take a look at Adam’s site. The rest of you should head on over to DNForum like me.

Here’s a link for those of you who prefer to keep your fingers on your mouse.

Domain Names On eBay are Junk

Posted under Domaining

Wow!  I just looked through 10+ pages of domain name listings on eBay and only found a couple names that were worth owning and at the same time reasonably priced.

Take a look at these eBay listings yourself.

I guess it is like anything; you have to put in the time and effort to find the diamonds in the rough.  Let me tell you though, it is rough over there on eBay.

Come On NameJet! Catch My Drop!

Posted under Domaining

I have a slight beef to pick with NameJet, so I thought I would go ahead and air my grievance here.

I tried backordering newyorkburgers.com before I took off for lunch because it was dropping today.  I got it in my backorder queue, locked my machine, and headed off for a Kansas City burger and fries (oh the irony).

When I got back from lunch I expected to see one of two things.  One, I was the proud new owner of newyorkburgers.com.  Two, I was now a participant in an auction for newyorkburgers.com.  To my surprise I found out that neither of the two scenarios came true.  What’s up with that?

Does anyone out there in the domain world know what went wrong?  This same thing happened with NameJet last month and I am getting a little frustrated.  :x

Is NameJet not catching the drop?

Am I missing something with the NameJet service?

I never have these problems with SnapNames:idea:

Update: It turns out I jumped the gun a little.  The name was picked up by NameJet and I am now in on an auction.  My apologies to NameJet for my lack of patience.  I just don’t like to be left wondering.
